- 2nd Place for Contemporary Kitchen Design
- 2nd Place for Contemporary Bath Design
- 2nd Place for Residential Small Space
- Honorable Mention for Transitional Bath Design
The term “Universal Design” was coined by Architect Ronald Mace to describe the concept of designing an environment that is usable by all people to the greatest extent possible regardless of age or ability. Examples of Universal Design include wide door openings, curb-free entrances, easy to reach outlet locations, easy-grip door and drawer hardware, and storage spaces that allow access for individuals of all heights.
“When I began designing our Sanibel home Universal Design was central to the program and I considered future needs and accessibility at every turn. It is a concept that is not widely understood and I wanted to showcase how small details can make major impacts on one’s lifestyle,” Bard explained. “Most Universal Design elements are invisible to the eye or integrate seamlessly into a home. It was an honor to be recognized for something that I am passionate about,” continued Bard.
